INFORMATION CAMPAIGN ON CARCASS CLASSIFICATION SYSTEM IN EU

The experts within the EU-funded Twinning Project “Support to establishment of carcass classification system in line with the EU Common Agricultural Policy”, held various lectures series about Carcass classification system in Spain, from 22nd to 24th May, 2023 in Belgrade.

Lecture series were prepared by Spanish experts and held on May 22nd at the Faculty of Agriculture in Novi Sad, Department of Animal Husbandry, May 23rd at the Faculty of Agriculture in Belgrade, Department of General Animal Husbandry and Breeding of Domestic and Farmed Animals, and on May 24th at the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine in Belgrade, Department of Hygiene and Technology of Foods of Animal Origin.


Lectures were held by Maura López de Ayala, Head of area of ruminants’ production and Mr. Jesús Salas, Head of pig, poultry and other livestock production area, Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food, Spain.

Ms. Maura López de Ayala has a degree in Veterinary medicine and a master's degree in Food safety by the Complutense University of Madrid, Spain. She has been working in the area of animal production and agricultural policy in the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food for 15 years. She has a large experience in the legislation affecting livestock sectors, in particular the one included in the common agriculture policy and market organization.

She has participated in several activities of the European Union related with marketing standards, labelling and carcass classification in North Macedonia and Bosnia and Herzegovina. She is the Member State Project Leader of the Twinning project “Support to establishment of carcass classification system in line with EU Common Agricultural Policy” in Serbia, since June 2022, collaborating with the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Water Management of Serbia, in the development of legislation and procedures and training of stakeholders.

Mr. Jesús Salas has a degree in Veterinary medicine and a Bachelor of Veterinary Science by the Complutense University of Madrid, Spain. He has been working in the area of animal feed and production and agricultural policy in the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food for 16 years. He has been in charge of the regulation and the market surveillance of the pig production and pig carcass classification system in Spain during the last 9 years and he has remarkable experience in the international markets, having participating in a training program in the World Trade Organization (WTO) during 6 months. He also participates as a professor in various master's degrees related to pig production at the Complutense University of Madrid and at the University of Lleida.

They offered information about beef and pig sectors, production systems, managements rules and carcass classification system in Spain that contributed to better understanding of the key functions of the system. Significantly, lectures were excellently attended by more than 100 students during three days, followed by discussions on the topic.
